Methane Gas

Methane gas is a colorless, odorless hydrocarbon with the molecular formula CH₄ and the simplest structure in the alkane family. Its four carbon-hydrogen single bonds give it a tetrahedral shape and allow it to undergo combustion with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide, water, and energy. Methane is the primary component of natural gas and serves as an important fuel and chemical feedstock for producing hydrogen, methanol, and other compounds. In chemistry and environmental research, its formation, detection, and oxidation are studied because methane is also a potent greenhouse gas released by biological activity, fossil-fuel systems, and waste decomposition.

Accuracy and precision of the techniques used to measure methane emissions from ruminant animals are critically important for the success of greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. This manuscript describes the principles and operation of an automated system to monitor methane and carbon dioxide mass fluxes from the breath of ruminant animals.
