Monochromator

A monochromator is an optical instrument that selects a narrow band of wavelengths from a broader source, enabling controlled analysis of light in chemistry and spectroscopy. It typically uses an entrance slit, a dispersive element such as a diffraction grating or prism, and an exit slit: the element separates wavelengths by angle, and the exit slit transmits the selected band while excluding much of the surrounding radiation. Monochromators support absorption, fluorescence, and emission measurements by providing wavelength control for samples and detectors, improving spectral resolution and helping researchers identify substances, quantify concentrations, and characterize molecular electronic transitions.

We describe a method for in-situ tapering of As2S3 fibers to achieve efficient mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. By tapering while monitoring the supercontinuum’s spectrum, the spectral width can be maximized for a fiber taper. In-situ fiber tapering can be applied to optimize the performance of other fiber-based devices.

The technique of femtosecond four-wave mixing is described, including spectrally-resolved and time-resolved configurations. We illustrate the utility of this technique for the investigation of crucial physical properties in the III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors, afforded by its nonlinearity and high temporal resolution.
