Oxynitride Phosphors

Oxynitride phosphors are luminescent inorganic materials in which oxygen and nitrogen share the anion sublattice, offering tunable optical properties for lighting and display technologies. Their emission typically arises when activator ions, such as rare-earth elements, absorb excitation energy and release it as visible light; replacing oxygen with nitrogen alters the crystal structure, covalency, and local crystal field, thereby shifting emission color and improving thermal stability. In chemistry, researchers synthesize and characterize these compositions to relate structure, composition, and photoluminescence. Their broad color tunability and resistance to thermal quenching support applications in phosphor-converted LEDs, solid-state lighting, and optical devices.

Phase-Dependent Control of Trap Depth and Persistent Luminescence in Strontium Aluminate Phosphors

2025

This study investigates the standard optical measurements of two persistent luminescent ceramics: SAO-B (blue) and SAO-G (green), such as thermoluminescence (TL) and persistent luminescence (PersL). By controlling electron trap depth, this work innovates 'temperature-resolved' and 'time-resolved' dynamic anti-counterfeiting methods.

The Phosphorus Cycle

2019

Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, phosphorus is not present in the atmosphere as a gas. Instead, most phosphorus in the ecosystem exists as compounds, such as phosphate ions (PO43-), found in soil, water, sediment and rocks. Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient (i.e., in short supply). Consequently, phosphorus is added to most agricultural fertilizers, which can cause environmental problems related to runoff in aquatic ecosystems. Biological Phosphorus Cycle Phosphorus is present in many...

Synthesis and Exfoliation of Discotic Zirconium Phosphates to Obtain Colloidal Liquid Crystals

2016

A two dimensional model material of discotic zirconium phosphate was developed. The inorganic crystal with lamellar structure was synthesized by hydrothermal, reflux, and microwave-assisted methods. On exfoliation with organic molecules, layered crystals can be converted to monolayers, and nematic liquid crystal phase was formed at sufficient concentration of monolayers.
