Plasma Temperature

Plasma temperature is a measure of the thermal energy associated with particles in an ionized gas, and it helps describe how that plasma behaves chemically and physically. Because electrons, ions, and neutral species can exchange energy at different rates, a plasma may have distinct electron and heavy-particle temperatures; these values reflect particle motion and energy distributions rather than a single uniform temperature. In chemistry, plasma temperature influences ionization, dissociation, excitation, and reaction rates, making it important for interpreting emission spectra and controlling processes such as analytical spectroscopy, plasma-assisted synthesis, and materials processing. Measuring it supports reliable diagnosis and process optimization.

2017

This article describes a flowing microwave reactor that is used to drive efficient non-equilibrium chemistry for the application of conversion/activation of stable molecules such as CO2, N2 and CH4. The goal of the procedure described here is to measure the in situ gas temperature and gas conversion.

Building Langmuir Probes and Emissive Probes for Plasma Potential Measurements in Low Pressure, Low Temperature Plasmas
