Water Exfoliation

Water exfoliation is a liquid-phase method that separates layered materials into thinner sheets or nanosheets using water as the processing medium. Mechanical forces such as sonication, stirring, or high-shear mixing overcome interlayer van der Waals attractions, while surface chemistry, oxidation, or added stabilizers can help keep the exfoliated layers dispersed and limit restacking. In chemistry, this approach supports the preparation of graphene, graphene oxide, clay nanosheets, and other two-dimensional materials for characterization and formulation. Its use of an aqueous medium can reduce reliance on hazardous organic solvents and enable scalable routes to functional nanomaterial dispersions.

A two dimensional model material of discotic zirconium phosphate was developed. The inorganic crystal with lamellar structure was synthesized by hydrothermal, reflux, and microwave-assisted methods. On exfoliation with organic molecules, layered crystals can be converted to monolayers, and nematic liquid crystal phase was formed at sufficient concentration of monolayers.

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.

States of Water

2019

Water exists in any one of the three classical states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam or water vapor). The state of water depends on i) the intermolecular forces that draw molecules together and ii) the kinetic energy that leads to movements that pull them apart. Water freezes when the intermolecular forces are greater than the kinetic energy. Unlike most other substances, water is less dense in its solid state than in its liquid state. This is because each water molecule can form...
