Therapeutic Outcomes

Therapeutic outcomes are the measurable changes in a patient’s health, functioning, symptoms, or quality of life that result from a clinical intervention. They are evaluated by defining relevant endpoints, collecting data before and after treatment or against a comparison group, and determining whether observed changes indicate benefit, limited effect, or harm. In clinical research and practice, outcome measures guide treatment selection, monitor patient progress, support evaluation of safety and effectiveness, and inform evidence-based care. Distinguishing patient-reported outcomes from clinical or laboratory measures helps researchers capture both lived experience and objective physiological responses when assessing therapeutic value.

Therapeutic Index

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...

Reliable and accurate outcome assessment is the key for translation of preclinical therapies into clinical treatment. The current paper describes how to assess three clinically relevant primary outcome parameters of cardiac performance and damage in a pig acute myocardial infarction model.

Predicting Reaction Outcomes

2023

Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand,...

Outcomes of Glycolysis

2019

Nearly all the energy used by cells comes from the bonds that make up complex organic compounds. These organic compounds are broken down into simpler molecules, such as glucose. As a result, cells extract energy from glucose over many chemical reactions—a process called cellular respiration. Cellular respiration can occur aerobically (with oxygen) or anaerobically (without oxygen). In the presence of oxygen, cellular respiration starts with glycolysis and continues with pyruvate oxidation, the...
