Upper Gi Tract

The upper GI tract is the portion of the gastrointestinal system that carries and begins digesting food through the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, making it central to nutrition and many clinical disorders. Coordinated peristalsis moves swallowed material forward, while gastric acid, pepsin, mucus, and bile or pancreatic secretions support chemical digestion and protect or process the mucosa. Clinicians evaluate this region to diagnose and manage gastroesophageal reflux, ulcers, inflammation, bleeding, obstruction, and tumors. Assessment may include symptom review, imaging, laboratory tests, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which can also guide biopsy or treatment.

Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy enables real-time microscopy of the human urinary tract during cystoscopy, providing dynamic, intravital imaging of pathological states such as bladder cancer with cellular resolution. Endomicroscopy may augment the diagnostic accuracy of standard white light endoscopy and provide intraoperative image guidance to improve surgical resection.
