Calcium Carbonate Formation

Calcium carbonate formation is the process by which calcium and carbonate ions combine to produce solid CaCO₃, a mineral important in natural systems and engineered materials. It commonly occurs when dissolved calcium and carbonate concentrations exceed solution saturation, triggering nucleation and crystal growth; pH, temperature, ionic strength, and mixing influence the rate and crystal structure. In engineering, controlling this precipitation supports cement and concrete production, scale management, water treatment, biomineralization research, and the manufacture of coatings, fillers, and advanced composites. Understanding formation conditions helps engineers tailor particle size, morphology, purity, and deposition while limiting unwanted buildup in pipes and industrial equipment.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...
