Dynamic Resistance

Dynamic resistance is the incremental opposition a nonlinear electrical device presents to a small change in current around a chosen operating point, rather than the overall voltage-to-current ratio. It is determined from the local slope of the device’s current-voltage characteristic, typically expressed as r_d = dV/dI, or approximated by ΔV/ΔI for sufficiently small changes. In engineering, this quantity supports small-signal analysis of diodes, transistors, sensors, and other components whose resistance varies with operating conditions. Estimating dynamic resistance helps predict voltage regulation, signal response, power behavior, and circuit stability, enabling more accurate models and practical designs.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...

When a voltage is applied to a conductor, an electrical field is generated, and charges in the conductor feel the force due to the electrical field. The current density that results depends on the electrical field and the properties of the material. In some materials, including metals at a given temperature, the current density is approximately proportional to the electrical field. In these cases, the current density can be modeled as: where σ is the electrical conductivity and is represented...

When a current moves through any conductor, the conductor causes some level of difficulty for the current to flow. The measure of that difficulty is known as the resistance of the material and is represented by R. Every material has its own resistance. In the case of conductors, heat is emitted whenever a current passes through them. Resistance depends on the resistivity of the material. Resistivity is a characteristic of the material used to fabricate electrical components, whereas the...
