Plasma Discharge

Plasma discharge is the formation and sustained flow of ionized gas through an electric field, producing a medium that conducts electricity and contains electrons, ions, and neutral species. When the applied voltage exceeds a breakdown threshold, free electrons accelerate, collide with gas molecules, and generate additional charged particles through ionization, creating an electron avalanche and a stable discharge under suitable pressure and current conditions. Engineering applications include lighting, plasma etching, surface treatment, thin-film deposition, propulsion, and pollution control. Controlling voltage, electrode geometry, gas composition, pressure, and power enables engineers to tailor discharge temperature, reactivity, and energy transfer for manufacturing and emerging technologies.
