Shape Mode Analysis

Shape mode analysis is an engineering method for identifying the characteristic deformation patterns, or mode shapes, that a structure exhibits during vibration. It uses a mathematical model of the structure’s mass and stiffness, together with boundary conditions, to solve an eigenvalue problem that yields natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes. Engineers apply these results in finite element analysis, structural design, and experimental modal testing to locate vibration-sensitive regions, assess dynamic behavior, and reduce the risk of resonance or fatigue. Comparing predicted and measured modes can also support model validation, damage detection, and the development of quieter, safer, and more durable mechanical systems.

What is a Mode?

2023

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...
