Silver Ion Photoreduction

Silver ion photoreduction is the light-driven conversion of dissolved silver ions (Ag+) into metallic silver (Ag0), a process used to create and control silver nanostructures. When illuminated, a photosensitizer, reducing agent, or semiconductor generates electrons that transfer to Ag+, triggering reduction, nucleation, and subsequent particle growth; light intensity, wavelength, exposure time, and reactant concentration influence the resulting size and morphology. In engineering, this method supports the fabrication of silver nanoparticles, conductive patterns, optical materials, and antimicrobial surfaces. Because it can provide spatial and temporal control without relying solely on thermal processing, silver ion photoreduction is valuable for materials synthesis and device manufacturing.

Formation of Complex Ions

A type of Lewis acid-base chemistry involves the formation of a complex ion (or a coordination complex) comprising a central atom, typically a transition metal cation, surrounded by ions or molecules called ligands. These ligands can be neutral molecules like H2O or NH3, or ions such as CN− or OH−. Often, the ligands act as Lewis bases, donating a pair of electrons to the central atom. These types of Lewis acid-base reactions are examples of a broad subdiscipline called coordination...

Femtosecond-laser direct-writing is frequently used to create three-dimensional (3D) patterns in polymers and glasses. However, patterning metals in 3D remains a challenge. We describe a method for fabricating silver nanostructures embedded inside a polymer matrix using a femtosecond laser centered at 800 nm.

Transporters in cell membranes allow differential segregation of ions across cell membranes or cell layers and play crucial roles during tissue physiology, repair and pathology. We describe the ion-selective self-referencing microelectrode that allows the measurement of specific ion fluxes at single cells and tissues in vivo.
