Smart Irrigation

Smart irrigation is an automated water-management approach that uses data and control systems to deliver water according to the needs of plants and soil. It combines soil-moisture sensors, weather information, flow meters, and programmable controllers to adjust irrigation timing and volume, reducing unnecessary watering caused by fixed schedules or changing environmental conditions. In engineering, these systems support efficient design and operation of agricultural, landscape, and urban water networks. By improving water-use efficiency, limiting runoff, and maintaining suitable soil moisture, smart irrigation can reduce resource consumption while supporting plant health and more sustainable infrastructure.

Are You Smart or Hardworking? How Praise Influences Children's Motivation

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Imagine teaching two children how to skate. It is a hard task for both of them, and they fall down frequently. After falling down for the first time, one child says that skating is too hard and wants to go home. The other child seems to enjoy the challenge and eagerly gets back up after falling down each time. Why do the children have such different attitudes about the same task? One reason may be that they...

Design Example: Design of an Irrigation Channel

2025

Trapezoidal channels are widely used in irrigation systems due to their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in conveying water. Trapezoidal channels feature a flat bottom and sloping sides, making them stable and easier to construct compared to other shapes. The bottom width and side slope ratio are determined based on the required flow capacity and site conditions. The side slope is kept gentle for unlined channels to prevent soil erosion.Hydraulic parameters in channel design include the flow...
