Thermal Back-conversion

Thermal back-conversion is the heat-driven return of a material, energy state, or engineered system from a converted condition toward its original state, making it important for reversible processing and thermal control. As temperature rises, supplied thermal energy can overcome an activation barrier and promote the reverse reaction, phase transition, or energy-transfer pathway, depending on the material and operating conditions. In engineering, this concept helps explain heat-induced changes in functional materials, assess cycle stability, and design systems that recover, reset, or regulate stored energy. Understanding the process supports improved thermal management, materials processing, and development of reversible technologies.

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

Conversion of Units

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...

Rapid PCR Thermocycling using Microscale Thermal Convection

2011

We describe a novel method to perform DNA replication via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Thermal convection is harnessed to continuously shuttle reagents between denaturing, annealing, and extension conditions by maintaining opposing surfaces of the reactor at constant temperature. This inherently simple design promises to make rapid PCR more accessible.
