Arthropod Diversity

Arthropod diversity encompasses the wide range of species, body plans, behaviors, and ecological roles found among insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and myriapods, making arthropods central to environmental processes. Their diversity arises through evolutionary adaptation, including changes in segmentation, appendages, feeding structures, life cycles, and habitat use that allow species to occupy terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and parasitic niches. Arthropods pollinate plants, decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients, regulate populations as predators or herbivores, and provide food for other organisms. Studying these patterns helps researchers assess ecosystem health, understand biodiversity and environmental change, and guide conservation strategies.

Kingdom Animalia is composed of a range of organisms united by a set of common characteristics. Barring a few exceptions, animals are multicellular eukaryotes that move, consume organic matter, and reproduce sexually. Although these attributes are shared, species within this kingdom are also extremely diverse. This diversity is due to adaptation of each species to a different niche. The niche of a species includes the area, function, and interrelationship of that species with other biotic and...

Form and Function of Crickets and Crayfish ExpandNOTE: To observe the relationship between form and function in animals, you will be examining and dissecting a cricket and a crayfish. Each pair of students will receive one of each of these organisms. When dissecting, be sure to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, and safety goggles. Take care when handling dissecting tools, as they may be sharp. HYPOTHESES: In this experiment, the experimental hypothesis could be that the cricket and crayfish have...

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...
