Field Collection Efficiency

Field collection efficiency is the effectiveness with which environmental sampling gathers representative, reliable data while minimizing time, labor, materials, and disturbance. It depends on coordinated sampling design, site selection, timing, replication, equipment performance, and careful sample recovery and handling, which together influence data quality and the proportion of usable samples obtained. Evaluating collection efficiency helps researchers compare field methods, identify sources of sampling loss or bias, and improve monitoring of water, soil, air, and biological systems. Efficient collection supports stronger environmental assessments, more consistent long-term datasets, and better-informed conservation, pollution-control, and regulatory decisions.

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

2022

Numerous novel virus-like sequences have been found in mosquitoes due to the extensive use of sequencing technologies. We provide an effective procedure for isolating and amplifying viruses using vertebrate and mosquito cell lines, which might serve as the basis for future studies on mosquito-associated viruses, including mosquito-borne and mosquito-specific viruses.
