Juvenile Fish Telemetry

Juvenile fish telemetry is a method for monitoring the movements, habitat use, survival, and behavior of young fish in natural or managed aquatic environments. Researchers attach miniature acoustic or radio transmitters, or use passive integrated tags, then detect transmitted signals with receivers positioned in the water or at strategic locations. Because tag size, attachment, handling stress, and battery life can influence results, study designs must balance reliable detection with juvenile health and development. These data reveal migration routes, dispersal, habitat preferences, and mortality patterns, supporting environmental assessment, fish conservation, population management, and evaluation of barriers or restoration projects.

Osmoregulation in Fishes

2019

When cells are placed in a hypotonic (low-salt) fluid, they can swell and burst. Meanwhile, cells in a hypertonic solution—with a higher salt concentration—can shrivel and die. How do fish cells avoid these gruesome fates in hypotonic freshwater or hypertonic seawater environments? Fish employ osmoregulatory strategies to balance bodily levels of water and dissolved ions (i.e., solutes), such as sodium and chloride. Imagine two solutions separated by a membrane that is permeable to water.
