Environmental Water Testing

Environmental water testing is the systematic analysis of water samples to assess quality, detect contamination, and evaluate impacts on human health and aquatic ecosystems. It combines physical measurements, chemical assays, and microbiological methods to identify indicators such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, metals, and pathogenic organisms, often by comparing results with regulatory or ecological benchmarks. In environmental sciences, testing supports pollution monitoring, drinking-water protection, wastewater management, and watershed assessment. Repeated sampling can reveal changes over time, trace contamination sources, and guide remediation, conservation, and policy decisions.

We describe a protocol for filtration of water samples with a filter cartridge and extraction of environmental DNA (eDNA) without having to cut open the housing to remove the filter. This protocol is developed for metabarcoding eDNA from fishes, but is also applicable to eDNA from other organisms.

Mice can swim, but many strains appear to find this activity stressful. To overcome this problem mazes have been devised where escape from shallow water is used to motivate behaviour. These have been demonstrated to support learning at least as good as the traditional and widely used Morris water maze.

Testing Water Quality

When the quality of water for concrete preparation is uncertain, its impact on the setting time of cement and compressive strength of mortar is assessed by comparison with de-ionized or distilled water benchmarks. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1602 requires the setting times to be within 90 minutes of the control, British Standard (BS) 3146:1980 allows a 30-minute variance in the initial setting, while British Standards European Norm (BS EN) 1008 specifies initial setting...

A method is discussed by which the in vivo mechanical behavior of stimuli-responsive materials is monitored as a function of time. Samples are tested ex vivo using a microtensile tester with environmental controls to simulate the physiological environment. This work further promotes understanding the in vivo behavior of our material.
