It can operate through motivated reasoning, selective attention, and biased interpretation, allowing people to rationalize choices without experiencing themselves as deliberately dishonest. In finance, self-deception can shape risk perception, spending, saving, and investment decisions: individuals may overestimate their skill, dismiss warning signs, or attribute losses to external causes while crediting themselves for gains. Recognizing these patterns supports more disciplined decision-making through explicit assumptions, independent feedback, and systematic review of outcomes.
