Plasma Gel Flotation

Plasma Gel Flotation is a density-based laboratory technique that separates and concentrates biological particles from blood or other complex samples, supporting microscopic and downstream analyses in infection research. The method uses a plasma-derived gel and controlled centrifugation to create a density gradient, allowing cells or microorganisms with different buoyant properties to partition into distinct layers for recovery. By enriching target populations and reducing sample complexity, plasma gel flotation can improve detection, enumeration, and characterization of infectious agents or host cells. It provides a practical approach for investigating pathogen biology, host responses, and diagnostic markers when direct examination of unprocessed samples is difficult.

Gel Purification

2023

Gel purification is used to recover DNA fragments after electrophoretic separation. DNA recovery from an agarose gel includes three basic steps: binding, washing and eluting from a silica column. DNA is believed to bind to silica in the presence of high salt via a salt bridge. Following binding, DNA is washed of impurities and eluted under low salt conditions disrupting this interaction. This video goes through a step-by-step, generalized procedure for cutting out a band from the gel, gel...
