Animal Experimentation

Animal experimentation is the controlled use of nonhuman animals in research to investigate biological processes, disease mechanisms, and responses to potential treatments. Researchers manipulate defined variables, compare experimental groups with controls, and measure physiological, behavioral, or pathological outcomes under specified conditions. In medicine, these studies can provide preclinical evidence about treatment efficacy, safety, pharmacology, and toxicity before human trials, while also supporting research into disease progression and preventive strategies. Their scientific value depends on appropriate model selection, rigorous experimental design, humane care, and careful interpretation of how well animal findings translate to human health.

Seizures negatively impact various functions and life quality. Planaria worms were exposed to varying concentrations of chemoconvulsants to evaluate their seizure phenotypes and disruptive motility. This study proposes using planaria worms as a model for acute seizures in humans and holds significance in drug development for epilepsy.

Form and Function of Crickets and Crayfish ExpandNOTE: To observe the relationship between form and function in animals, you will be examining and dissecting a cricket and a crayfish. Each pair of students will receive one of each of these organisms. When dissecting, be sure to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, and safety goggles. Take care when handling dissecting tools, as they may be sharp. HYPOTHESES: In this experiment, the experimental hypothesis could be that the cricket and crayfish have...
