Juvenile Rat Model

A juvenile rat model is a laboratory research system that uses young rats to study biological development, disease, and treatment responses during early life stages. Because organ systems, metabolism, behavior, and neural circuits change with age, researchers control factors such as developmental timing, dosing, and environmental conditions to measure age-dependent physiological and behavioral effects. In medicine, these models support investigation of pediatric diseases, developmental disorders, drug efficacy, and safety, including how immature organisms absorb, distribute, metabolize, and respond to therapies. Findings can clarify mechanisms of early-life illness and inform the design of clinically relevant studies for children.

2025

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity (PHHP) can be modeled in neonatal rats by combining chorioamnionitis and intraventricular hemorrhage. The combination of these prenatal and postnatal events accurately recapitulates the clinical hallmarks of PHHP, including macrocephaly, ventriculomegaly, and elevated intracranial pressure, through the lifespan.

Implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in Juvenile Landrace Swine: A LVAD Implantation Model of Pediatric Heart Failure

2026

This article presents a protocol to implant the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) into a piglet. This model represents a potent way to study the LVAD implantation in children and reveal the mechanism of ventricular reverse remodeling in LVAD treatment.

Intrathecal Vector Delivery in Juvenile Rats via Lumbar Cistern Injection

A surgical procedure is described to perform injections into the lumbar cistern of the juvenile rat. This approach has been used for the intrathecal delivery of gene therapy vectors, but it is anticipated that this approach can be used for a variety of therapeutics, including cells and drugs.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

2011

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.
