Orthopedic Trauma

Orthopedic trauma is the diagnosis and treatment of acute injuries to the musculoskeletal system, including fractures, dislocations, and damage to bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues. Care begins by assessing neurovascular status and injury severity, then restoring alignment and stability through reduction, immobilization, or surgical fixation while protecting soft-tissue viability. In medicine, these principles guide emergency management, rehabilitation, and prevention of complications such as infection, impaired healing, and loss of function. Orthopedic trauma research also advances implant design, imaging, damage-control strategies, and coordinated care for complex injuries caused by accidents, falls, or high-energy events.

Pseudofracture, a reproducible murine model of sterile musculoskeletal trauma, allows for evaluation of late term post-traumatic immune responses. This article describes the procedural execution of the model step by step, including the potential for experimental model combinations to permit study of multiple trauma.

Acute Brain Trauma in Mice Followed By Longitudinal Two-photon Imaging

Acute brain trauma is a severe injury that has no adequate treatment to date. Multiphoton microscopy allows studying longitudinally the process of acute brain trauma development and probing therapeutical strategies in rodents. Two models of acute brain trauma studied with in vivo two-photon imaging of brain are demonstrated in this protocol.

Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Culture and Delivery in Autologous Conditions: A Smart Approach for Orthopedic Applications

Cited by 28 •

2016

Culturing human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hMSCs) with autologous serum, reduces the risks of rejection by xenogeneic material and other negative effects. It also allows for the recovery of a subset of mesodermal progenitors, which can deliver fresh hMSCs. Embedding hMSCs in an autologous fibrin clot enables easy handling and effective surgical implantation.
