Renal Interstitial Fibrosis

Renal interstitial fibrosis is the progressive accumulation of excess extracellular matrix within the kidney’s interstitial space, a common final pathway of chronic kidney injury that disrupts normal tissue architecture and function. Persistent inflammation, tubular injury, and activation of interstitial fibroblasts promote collagen deposition and reduce the microenvironment needed for healthy nephron function. As fibrosis advances, it can impair tubular repair, alter renal blood flow, and contribute to declining kidney function and chronic kidney disease. Studying its cellular mechanisms and tissue changes supports the development of biomarkers, experimental disease models, and therapies aimed at limiting fibrosis and preserving renal function.

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.
