Resistance Training Protocol

A resistance training protocol is a structured plan for performing exercises against external resistance to improve strength, muscle function, or physical capacity. It defines variables such as exercise selection, load, repetitions, sets, frequency, and rest, while progression increases the challenge as adaptation occurs. Repeated muscle contractions generate mechanical tension and promote neuromuscular adaptations, including improved motor-unit recruitment and force production. In medicine, individualized protocols support rehabilitation after injury or illness, help preserve function during aging, and complement care for conditions involving weakness, reduced mobility, or loss of muscle mass.
