Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), also called partial knee replacement, is a surgical procedure that resurfaces only the damaged compartment of the knee while preserving healthy bone, cartilage, ligaments, and the remaining compartments. During the operation, the surgeon removes arthritic joint surfaces from the medial or lateral compartment and implants metal and polyethylene components that recreate a smooth, load-bearing joint while retaining native knee structures, including the cruciate ligaments when appropriate. UKA is used for carefully selected patients with compartment-limited osteoarthritis, providing pain relief and functional restoration with less tissue disruption than total knee arthroplasty; proper patient selection, alignment, and implant positioning strongly influence outcomes.

This protocol presents a cadaveric study of a wireless sensor used in medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. The protocol includes the installation of an angle measuring device, standardized Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty osteotomy, preliminary assessment of flexion-extension balance, and application of the sensor to measure flexion-extension gap pressure.

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is indicated for the treatment of conditions that cannot be treated with conventional arthroplasty or other procedures. These primarily include degenerative and incapacitating conditions with irreparable rotator cuff and loss of the normal biomechanical coupling of the shoulder.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

Differential diagnostics in painful arthroplasty is crucial for treatment success. Joint aspiration is routinely performed preoperatively. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction of the joint aspirate and the sonication fluid, a feasible tool for quick pathogen detection from these samples is described.
