Vacuum Pump Blood Draw

Vacuum pump blood draw is a venipuncture method that uses negative pressure to collect blood into an evacuated tube, providing a controlled and efficient alternative to manual aspiration. After a needle enters a vein, the tube’s partial vacuum pulls blood through the collection set until the pressure difference is reduced; tube additives then preserve the specimen for its intended analysis. In medicine, this approach supports routine laboratory testing, including hematology, chemistry, and coagulation studies, while standardized tubes and fill volumes help maintain sample quality. Proper tube selection, order of draw, and gentle handling reduce contamination, hemolysis, and inaccurate results.

Blood draws are necessary in a large number of studies, for example to study the pharmacokinetics profile of a compound. Here, we demonstrate how to draw blood from rats using two techniques: blood draw from the saphenous vein or by cardiac puncture.

Here, we describe a simple tail vein blood sampling method in non-anesthetized rats using a vacuum extraction tube system. This method reduces the risk of direct exposure to blood and simplifies taking multiple samples from a single venipuncture.

Fabricating Metamaterials Using the Fiber Drawing Method

Metamaterials at terahertz frequencies offer unique opportunities, but are challenging to fabricate in bulk. We adapt the fabrication procedure for microstructured polymer optical fibers to inexpensively fabricate metamaterials potentially on an industrial scale. We produce polymethylmethacrylate fibers containing ~10 μm diameter indium wires separated by ~100 μm, which exhibit a terahertz plasmonic response.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Colloquially, the terms learning and memory encompass a broad range of behaviors and mental systems, everything from learning to tie a shoe to mastering calculus (and a lot in between). Experimental psychologists have divided up learning mechanisms into groups that seem to have different properties, and that seem to rely on different brain systems. A major division is between declarative and non-declarative memory, roughly, the...
