Market Supply Demand

Market supply and demand is a foundational microeconomic framework that explains how the availability of goods and services interacts with consumers’ willingness to buy, shaping prices and quantities exchanged. Demand generally decreases as price rises, while supply tends to increase because higher prices can encourage producers to offer more; their interaction establishes a market equilibrium where quantity supplied equals quantity demanded. Shifts caused by income, preferences, production costs, technology, or policy can move these curves and change outcomes. Analyzing market supply and demand helps explain shortages, surpluses, price changes, resource allocation, and the effects of taxes, subsidies, and other interventions.

Supply and Demand, and Efficiency in a Perfectly Competitive Market I

2025

In a perfectly competitive market, efficiency is achieved when total surplus, the sum of consumer and producer surplus, is maximized. Consumer surplus represents the benefit consumers receive from purchasing a product at a price lower than what they are willing to pay, while producer surplus reflects the benefit producers gain from selling at a price higher than their minimum acceptable price. When production decreases, the quantity available in the market falls. With fewer goods available, some...

Supply and Demand, and Efficiency in a Perfectly Competitive Market II

In a perfectly competitive market, efficiency is achieved when total surplus, the sum of consumer and producer surplus, is maximized. This occurs at the equilibrium level, where supply equals demand. If production increases beyond this equilibrium level, the marginal cost increases as output rises. The perfectly competitive model assumes that producers continue increasing output until their marginal cost equals the market price. If the market price exceeds equilibrium, producers supply more...

Market demand is the total amount of a product that buyers in a specific market are willing and able to purchase at a given price. The following factors influence it: Price: When prices drop, demand usually goes up, and when prices rise, demand tends to decrease. This idea is shown in demand curves. Consumer Preferences: What people like and dislike can greatly affect demand for a product. Income: Increasing levels of purchasing power contribute to increasing demand, especially for high-quality...

Market supply refers to the total quantity of a good or service that all producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices within a specific market. It is derived by summing the individual quantities supplied by all producers in the market at each price level. A market supply curve is created using a schedule that lists different price-quantity combinations supplied by all producers. An example is the aggregate supply of smartphones provided by various manufacturers. For...

The Market Supply of Labor

The amount of total work people are willing and able to perform in the market is determined by how much labor each worker offers collectively. In the labor market, a vast number of workers supply labor. The total quantity of work that is offered by labor is based on the prevailing wage level. The relationship between wages and the quantity of labor supplied by all workers in the market is depicted by the market supply curve of labor. The Upward-Sloping Labor Supply Curve The labor supply curve...
