Approach Avoidance Behavior

Approach avoidance behavior describes the conflict that arises when a stimulus, situation, or choice simultaneously motivates movement toward and away from it. In neuroscience, this conflict reflects competing appetitive and defensive motivational systems, shaped by learning, reward value, threat, and context; neural circuits involving the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, striatum, and related limbic regions help evaluate these competing signals and guide action. Researchers study approach avoidance behavior through decision-making tasks, animal models, and behavioral measurements of choice, movement, and hesitation. This framework helps explain anxiety, risk assessment, addiction, social decision-making, and other conditions in which attraction and aversion influence behavior.

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

2025

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

Frustration and Conflict: Approach-Approach, Approach-Avoidance

Frustration occurs when people are obstructed or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. For example, when someone's input is ignored in a discussion, it can lead to feelings of frustration. Conflict, however, arises from opposing interests, goals, or actions. Conflicts can take various forms based on the nature of these opposing desires or goals. One common type of conflict is the Approach–Approach Conflict. In this case, a person faces two desirable options,...

Examine Chemoavoidance Behavior in Transgenic Worms Using Osmotic Avoidance Assay

2025

This video describes an osmotic avoidance assay to examine chemoavoidance behavior in a transgenic worm model. Avoidance behavior is tested in a plate in the presence of a high-osmotic barrier and chemoattractant. The worms with a functional loss of neurons get attracted by the chemoattractant, cross the high-osmotic barrier, and become paralyzed in the trap zone because of the anesthetic solution.

The mechanical conflict-avoidance assay is used as a non-reflexive readout of pain sensitivity in mice which can be used to better understand affective-motivational responses in a variety of mouse pain models.

Investigating Pain-Related Avoidance Behavior using a Robotic Arm-Reaching Paradigm

Avoidance is central to chronic pain disability, yet adequate paradigms for examining pain-related avoidance are lacking. Therefore, we developed a paradigm that allows investigating how pain-related avoidance behavior is learned (acquisition), spreads to other stimuli (generalization), can be mitigated (extinction), and how it may subsequently re-emerge (spontaneous recovery).
