Experimental Eye

Experimental eye research uses laboratory models, measurements, and controlled interventions to investigate how the eye detects light and supports vision. In neuroscience, researchers examine mechanisms such as phototransduction in retinal cells, synaptic signaling through retinal circuits, and the transmission of visual information to the brain, often by applying defined visual stimuli or recording neural activity. These approaches clarify relationships between ocular structure and function, reveal how retinal and neural pathways are altered by injury or disease, and support the evaluation of treatments and experimental therapies. Experimental eye studies therefore connect cellular mechanisms with visual behavior and broader nervous-system function.

A Technique to Induce Chronic Experimental Autoimmune Dry Eye in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to induce chronic experimental autoimmune dry eye disease in rats. Upon injecting an antigen-adjuvant emulsion containing autoantigens and foreign antigens into a rat at predefined intervals, chronic eye inflammation is induced in the immunized rat by injecting the same antigens into the ocular surface tissues.

Without using anesthesia, subcutaneously inject the emulsion at the base of the rat tails. Then, on day 14 in a similar manner, inject 200 microliters of the same antigen and incomplete Freund's Adjuvant. On the same day, intraperitoneally inject 300 nanograms of pertussis toxin in 100 microliters of PBS.

Eye movement monitoring (or eye tracking) reveals where in space the eyes linger, when and for how long. Here, we demonstrate how eye tracking can be used to investigate the integrity of memory in multiple participant populations, without requiring verbal, or otherwise explicit, reports.

Cited by 93 •

2012

Eye tracking has long been used to study gaze patterns in typically-developing individuals, but recent technological advancements have made its use with clinical populations, including autism, more feasible. While eye-tracking young children with autism can offer insight into early symptom manifestations, it involves methodological challenges. Suggestions for best practices are provided.
