Fnirs Probe Placement

fNIRS probe placement is the systematic positioning of light-emitting and light-detecting optodes on the scalp to measure changes in cortical blood oxygenation noninvasively. Near-infrared light passes through scalp and skull, and detectors capture changes in absorption associated with oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, creating measurement channels over targeted brain regions. In neuroscience, accurate placement helps align channels with functional anatomy, supports reliable comparisons across participants, and improves interpretation of brain activity during cognitive, sensory, and motor tasks. Careful spacing, scalp contact, anatomical landmarks, and motion control also reduce signal loss and measurement artifacts.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

2015

Monitoring brain activity outside the lab without physical constraints presents methodological challenges. A fiberless, wearable functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) system was used to measure brain activity during an ecological prospective memory task. It was demonstrated that this system could be used to monitor brain activity during non-lab based experiments.
