Microdrive Construction

Microdrive construction is the design and assembly of compact mechanical devices that position neural recording or stimulating electrodes within the brain over extended experiments. A threaded screw, guide cannula, or similar actuator advances the electrode in controlled increments, allowing researchers to adjust its depth while the drive remains secured to the skull and maintains stable electrical access. In neuroscience, microdrives support chronic electrophysiology, including recordings from individual neurons and neuronal populations in awake, behaving animals. Their adjustable architecture helps target multiple brain regions, track neural activity across sessions, and relate firing patterns to behavior, learning, and disease-related changes.

2013

The design and assembly of microdrives for in vivo electrophysiological recordings of brain signals from the mouse is described. By attaching microelectrode bundles to sturdy driveable carriers, these techniques allow for long-term and stable neural recordings. The lightweight design allows for unrestricted behavioral performance by the animal following drive implantation.

Here, we demonstrate fabrication of collagen-based, tissue constructs containing skeletal myoblasts. These 3-D engineered constructs may be used to replace or repair tissues in vivo. For our purposes, we have designed these as an atrioventricular electrical conduit for the repair of complete heart block[1].
