Stress Assessment

Stress assessment is the systematic measurement of an individual's psychological, physiological, and behavioral responses to challenging or threatening conditions, providing insight into how stress affects brain and body function. In neuroscience, assessment commonly combines self-reported experiences with indicators such as cortisol release through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, autonomic activity, heart rate, and changes in attention or behavior. These complementary measures help distinguish acute from chronic stress and relate stress exposure to neural circuits involved in emotion, learning, and regulation. Stress assessment supports research on mental health, cognition, and resilience while informing the evaluation of interventions designed to reduce harmful stress-related effects.

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...
