Acoustic Physics

Acoustic physics is the study of sound, including how mechanical waves are generated, transmitted, reflected, and detected in gases, liquids, and solids. Sound travels when particles in a medium oscillate, producing pressure variations whose frequency determines pitch, amplitude influences intensity, and interactions with boundaries cause reflection, refraction, diffraction, or resonance. These principles support applications such as architectural acoustics, noise control, musical instrument design, medical ultrasound, sonar, and nondestructive testing. Understanding acoustic physics also helps researchers analyze wave propagation, material properties, energy transfer, and the behavior of complex systems across scales.

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The examination of the body is fundamental to the practice of medicine. Since the Roman Empire, physicians have described the connection between alterations in function of specific parts of the body and specific disease states and have sought to further scientific understanding to improve bedside diagnosis. However, in this modern age of increasing technology within medical diagnostics, it...

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.
