Nonlinear Viscoelastic Behavior

Nonlinear viscoelastic behavior describes how materials with time-dependent deformation respond nonproportionally to applied stress, so strain depends on both loading magnitude and history. Unlike linear viscoelasticity, in which stress and strain remain proportional, nonlinear response can arise when large deformations alter molecular structure, relaxation pathways, or internal resistance, producing effects such as strain stiffening, softening, hysteresis, and rate dependence. Researchers characterize this behavior through controlled creep, stress-relaxation, and oscillatory tests across different amplitudes and frequencies. These measurements support constitutive models for polymers, biological tissues, gels, and complex fluids, helping predict performance under realistic loads and design materials with targeted damping, flexibility, or strength.

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Causes of Nonlinearity

2025

Nonlinearity in drug pharmacokinetics is caused by various factors influencing how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Understanding these nonlinear processes is crucial for predicting drug behavior in the body and optimizing drug dosing regimens. Nonlinear drug absorption can occur when the process is rate-limited by solubility, carrier-mediated transport systems, or saturation of the presystemic gut wall or hepatic metabolism. For instance, high doses of riboflavin...

Saturable and reverse saturable scattering were discovered in isolated plasmonic particles and adopted as a novel non-bleaching contrast method in super-resolution microscopy. Here the experimental procedures of detecting and extracting nonlinear scattering are explained in detail, as well as how to enhance resolution with the aid of saturated excitation microscopy.

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.
