Therapeutic Intervention

Therapeutic intervention is a structured action designed to reduce psychological distress, improve functioning, or support adaptive behavior and emotional well-being. In psychology, interventions use methods such as cognitive restructuring, behavioral practice, exposure, skills training, or supportive communication to change maladaptive thoughts, learned responses, coping patterns, and interpersonal processes; their selection typically follows assessment and case formulation. Applications range from treating anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, and substance use to strengthening resilience and supporting behavior change. Studying therapeutic intervention helps researchers evaluate treatment mechanisms, effectiveness, accessibility, and adaptation across individuals, settings, and cultural contexts.

Loss of the righting reflex has long served as a standard behavioral surrogate for unconsciousness, also called hypnosis, in laboratory animals. Alterations in volatile anesthetic sensitivity caused by pharmacological interventions can be detected with a carefully controlled high-throughput assessment system, which may be adapted for delivery of any inhaled therapeutic.
