機会費用とは、意思決定の際に放棄しなければならない次善の選択肢の価値を指します。これは、ある選択肢を選ぶことで犠牲になる潜在的な利益または機会を表します。機会費用を理解することは、個人、企業、社会が選択の真のコストを評価するのに役立つため、意思決定において不可欠です。

人生では、あらゆる決定にはトレードオフが伴い、1 つの選択肢を選択することは別の選択肢を放棄することを意味します。たとえば、高等教育を受けるには、フルタイムの雇用による即時の収入を放棄するという機会費用がかかる場合があります。同様に、1 つの投資機会にリソースを割り当てると、他の事業から得られる潜在的な利益を逃す可能性があります。

機会費用を考慮することで、個人は目標と優先事項に沿ったより情報に基づいた意思決定を下すことができます。これにより、さまざまな選択肢の利点と欠点を比較検討し、最も高い価値または有用性を提供するものを選択できます。ビジネスでは、機会費用を理解することは、リソースの割り当て、価格戦略、投資決定に役立ち、限られたリソースの効率的な使用を保証します。

機会費用は、個人または企業が他の選択肢よりも1つの選択肢を選択することによって放棄する利益を表します。これは、利用可能な次善のオプションを選択しない場合のコストを定量化します。

2種類の製品を製造している会社について考えてみましょう。ただし、リソースが限られているため、生産能力が制限されています。1日に100ユニットの良品Aまたは200ユニットの良品Bを生産することができます。

財Aの各ユニットからの利益は5ドルで、100ユニットを生産すると500ドルの利益が得られることを意味します。

逆に、良いBの各ユニットは2ドルの利益を生み出すので、良いBを200ユニット生産すると400ドルの利益になります。

このシナリオでは、企業が良い A を生産することを決定した場合、この決定の機会費用は、良い B を生産しないことによって見送られる利益です。

会社は良いBを選択することで400ドルを稼ぐことができたので、良いAを生産する機会費用は400ドルです。

機会費用を考慮することで、企業や個人はより多くの情報に基づいた意思決定を行うことができます。彼らは、あるオプションを別のオプションよりも選択するときに何を犠牲にしなければならないかを理解できます。
