企業が労働者を雇用することで得られる追加収益は、労働の限界生産力 (VMP_L) の値によって決まります。労働の限界生産力が減少するということは、雇用される労働者の量が増えると VMP_L が減少することを意味します。

企業が労働者を雇用する際に発生する追加コストは、現行の市場賃金率です。これは、完全競争の労働市場では、企業は現行の市場賃金で潜在的な労働者を何人でも雇用できるためです。最終的には、企業の雇用決定は VMP_L と現行の賃金率の比較によって決まります。

最後に雇用された労働者の VMP_L が現行の賃金率を超える場合、労働者を追加雇用すると企業の総利益が増加します。これは、追加労働者が雇用コストと同額以上の追加収益をもたらすためです。したがって、企業は VMP_L が現行の賃金率と等しくなるまで労働者を追加雇用することで利益を最大化します。
