労働市場の需要の変化は、雇用主がどのような賃金でも雇用する意思のある労働者の総数の変化を示します。この需要は、製品価格の変化や生産プロセスにおける技術の進歩など、賃金以外の要因によって影響を受けます。労働需要が変化すると、需要曲線全体が動きます。

たとえば、技術の進歩により、労働者が同じ時間内により多くの成果を生み出せるようにする改良されたソフトウェアツールが利用可能になる場合があります。このような労働力増強技術は、労働の限界生産物 (VMP_L) 価値を高めます。その結果、どの賃金レベルでもより多くの労働者が要求され、労働需要曲線が右にシフトします。これにより、既存の賃金では労働者が不足し、企業はより多くの労働者を引き付けて生産を増やすために提示する賃金を引き上げざるを得なくなります。最終的には、均衡賃金と雇用レベルの両方が増加します。

技術の進歩により、高度な自動化システムなど、労働力を置き換える技術も導入される可能性があります。この技術は労働者の VMP_L を低下させ、あらゆる賃金レベルで企業が要求する労働量を減らします。これにより、既存の賃金で労働力が余剰となり、労働者は雇用を維持するために必要な賃金を下げざるを得なくなります。最終的には、より低い賃金で雇用される労働者の数が減少し、均衡賃金と均衡雇用レベルの両方が低下します。

労働に対する市場需要曲線は、労働の限界生産物またはVMP_Lの価値も反映しています。つまり、製品の価格が上昇するなど、VMP_Lを変更する何かが、労働の需要曲線を右にシフトさせるのです。

小麦の消費量が急増したため、小麦の価格が上昇したとします。農家は、各労働者が生み出す収益が増加するにつれて、より多くの労働力を雇う方が収益性が高いと感じています。

この小麦価格の上昇は、農業労働者のVMP_Lを強化し、労働需要曲線を右にシフトさせます。

これにより、労働者の均衡賃金率が高くなります。

労働の雇用水準は、より多くの努力を可能にするために上昇しますが、これはより多くの小麦を生産するために必要です。

世界的な小麦需要の減少により小麦価格が下落すると、VMP_Lは減少します。

これにより、各労働者の収益への貢献度が低下するため、労働者の雇用は小麦生産者にとって魅力的ではなくなります。その結果、労働需要が低下し、需要曲線が左にシフトします。その結果、農業労働者の賃金が下がり、仕事が少なくなります。
