囚人のジレンマはゲーム理論の基本的な例です。2 人の合理的な個人が、たとえ協力することが彼らの利益になる場合でも、協力しない可能性があることを示しています。また、各プレーヤーの選択が相手の決定に対する最善の反応であるというナッシュ均衡の概念も示しています。

価格操作の疑いがある 2 つのビジネスライバル、A 社と B 社を想像してください。両社は別々に尋問され、自白 (相手を裏切る) するか否認 (協力する) するかの 2 つの選択肢があります。結果は両社の決定によって異なります。

1. 両社が関与を否認した場合、少額の罰金などの最小限の罰則が科せられます。最も良い結果は、どちらの会社も相手に不利な証拠を提示しないことです。
2. A 社が自白し、B 社が否認した場合、A 社は罰則なしで報われますが、B 社は高額の罰金やさらなる法的措置などの厳しい罰則に直面します。B 社が自白し、A 社が否認した場合は逆の結果になります。
3. 両社が自白した場合、両社とも否認した場合よりも悪い中程度の罰金が科せられますが、一方が受ける厳しい罰よりはましです。

このシナリオでは、両社が自白を選択した場合にナッシュ均衡が実現します。否認する方が両社にとって良いのですが、各社は相手方の自白に協力するのではないかと恐れています。これにより両社とも防御的な行動をとり、結果として両社とも協力した場合よりも不利な結果に陥ります。この例は、インセンティブの構造によって合理的なプレーヤーが共同の利益を最大化しない決定を下す可能性があることを説明しています。囚人のジレンマゲームは、信頼とコミュニケーションがない場合の協力の難しさを浮き彫りにしています。

ナッシュ均衡は、ゲーム内のすべてのプレイヤーが、他のプレイヤーが選択した戦略を考慮して、自分に最適な戦略を選択することで発生します。他のプレイヤーが戦略を変更せずに戦略を変更することで利益を得ることはできません。

囚人のジレンマを考えてみましょう。これは、ゲーム理論の典型的な例です。

2人の容疑者が別々に逮捕され、尋問されます。各容疑者には2つの選択肢があります。容疑者は、黙って犯罪を自白したり否定したりすることで相手を裏切ることができます。

これがゲームのペイオフマトリックスです。

両方の容疑者が黙って協力した場合、それぞれ1年の刑が与えられる。これは犯罪に対する罰則を反映していますが、刑期を延長するための追加の証拠は想定されていません。

容疑者の一人が自白して相手を裏切った場合、法執行機関は、協力の報酬として裏切り者に自由の身を引く取引を提供します。しかし、無口な容疑者は、弁護がないため、より厳しい判決を受けます。

両容疑者がお互いを裏切った場合、それぞれ2年の懲役刑を受けることになる。この結果は、両者が沈黙を守ることを選択した場合よりも悪い。
