熱力学の第一法則では、エネルギーは創造も破壊もされず、変換されるだけであるとされています。このことは、古典的な食物網で実証されています。太陽からの光エネルギーは、植物によって放射エネルギーとして利用され、化学エネルギーに変換されて、複雑な炭水化物として貯蔵されます。その後、植物は動物に食べられ、消化の過程で糖質が熱としてエネルギーを放出します。また、糖質が産生する化学エネルギーは、動物の働きに使い果たされたり、グリコーゲンや脂肪酸などの高分子に蓄えられたり、捕食者に食べられます。動物から排出された排泄物や死んだ有機物は、バクテリアや菌類によって分解されて土壌へと戻され、植物が育つための糧となり、このサイクルが続いていくのです。

 光合成の過程で、光子は、植物が生き成長するために使用する、複雑な炭水化物を作るために利用され、酸素は大気中に放出されます。
 
 植物は最終的に草食動物の餌となり、消化の過程でその糖が分解され、エネルギーが放出されます。エネルギーは熱、またはグルコースからの化学エネルギーとして放出され、動物の生存と繁殖を可能にする細胞プロセスを駆動します。エネルギーは、化学エネルギーとして高分子に貯蔵することもできます。例えば、グリコーゲンは肝臓や筋肉に貯蔵され、エネルギー需要が高い時に素早く利用することが可能です。またエネルギーは、脂肪酸の形で備蓄として蓄えることもできます。最後に、動物は捕食者である肉食動物にエネルギーを渡す場合もあり、肉食動物の体内で同じように利用されます。
 
 各段階からの廃棄物は、空気や、水、土壌に返され、食物網の維持に使われます。バクテリアや菌類のような分解者は、死んだ有機物を食べて土に返すため、植物は再びこれを使用して成長できるのです。

Energy flow in a food web shows the First Law of Thermodynamics in action. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form as it moves through living things and the environment.

Sunlight is the starting point. Plants capture radiant energy from the sun during photosynthesis and turn it into chemical energy stored in complex carbohydrates. At the same time, oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Herbivores eat the plants and use those sugars during digestion. The energy is released as heat or used as chemical energy from glucose to power cellular processes that help the animal survive and reproduce. Some of that energy is also stored in macromolecules. Glycogen can be kept in the liver or muscles and used quickly when energy demand is high. Energy can also be stored as fatty acids.

That stored energy can then move to a predator, such as a carnivore, which uses it in a similar way. Waste products and dead organic matter from animals are broken down by decomposers like bacteria and fungi. The materials return to the soil, air, or water, and plants can use them again as the food web continues.
