アルデヒドまたはケトンは、酸触媒条件下でα-ハロゲン化を受け、モノハロゲン生成物を生成します。
ここで、C=O酸素は最初に酸によってプロトン化され、共鳴安定化陽イオンを形成します。その後、カチオン中間体はα炭素で脱プロトン化され、エノール互変異性体が生成されます。
電子を放出する-OH基がC=C結合を高い求核性にすると、二重結合は求電子性のハロゲン分子を急速に攻撃してモノハロゲン化カルボカチオンを形成します。
最後に、カルボカチオンの脱プロトン化により、αハロアルデヒドまたはケトンが生成されます。
電子吸引性ハロゲン原子の存在は、C = O酸素原子の反応性を低下させ、したがって、複数のハロゲン化を防ぎます。
