密度は、単位体積あたりの物体の質量として定義され、物体が流体に浮くか沈むかを判断するのに役立ちます。

上記の例では、石の密度が水の密度よりも大きいため、沈みます。一方、木材の密度は低いため、浮いてしまいます。

質量が異なる同じ材料のオブジェクトは、同じ密度を持ちます。

オブジェクトの体積に対して密度が変動する場合、または2つ以上の異なる材料が不均一に混在している場合は、平均密度を定義します。

これらのオブジェクトの平均密度は、総質量をその総体積で割ったものに等しくなります。
