Characteristics of Dry Friction

乾燥摩擦は、潤滑剤や液体が存在せずに二つの固体表面が互いに滑り合う時に起こります。これは、庭師が車輪付きの台車を押すような場合に、物体を表面上で推進する際に抵抗を引き起こします。カートを動かすために加えられる力は、車輪と地面の間で乾燥摩擦を引き起こします。
台車が動き始める前に、静止摩擦力は接触面に対して接線方向に働き、運動を引き起こす力に対抗します。この摩擦力によって、台車が滑らないようになり、安定性を維持するのに役立ちます。静止摩擦力は、二つの表面間で相対的な運動がない場合にのみ存在することに注意する必要があります。

台車が滑り始める時、インターフェース上での最大静止摩擦力は法線力に比例します。この関係は、接触している材料の種類と表面の粗さに依存する静止摩擦係数によって定義されます。

Dry friction is the resistance between two solid surfaces that move against each other without lubrication or any fluid. A common example is a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow across the ground. The wheel and the ground create dry friction that slows the motion.

Before the wheelbarrow starts to move, static friction acts at the contact surface. Static friction is the force that opposes motion before slipping begins, and it helps keep the wheelbarrow stable. It is present only when there is no relative motion between the two surfaces.

As the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static friction depends on the normal force. The normal force is the push that surfaces exert on each other at the contact point. This maximum static friction is described by the coefficient of static friction, which depends on the materials in contact and on how rough their surfaces are.

Static friction also does not depend on contact area when the normal pressure stays within a range that avoids deformation or damage. So, even if the wheel and the ground touch over a larger or smaller area, the static friction can stay the same under those conditions. Once the wheelbarrow begins to slide, kinetic friction takes over.

Kinetic friction is the friction force during motion. It is also proportional to the normal force, but it is usually smaller than the maximum static friction. At very low speed, however, kinetic friction can become nearly equal to the maximum static friction because the surfaces have more time to interact.

The coefficient of kinetic friction mainly depends on surface properties and the surrounding environment. Temperature, humidity, and surface contamination can change its value. Knowing how static and kinetic friction respond to material type, surface roughness, and environmental conditions helps in choosing the right materials for different uses.
