The Fourier Transform helps analyze signals by linking the time domain and the frequency domain. Its properties show how a signal changes when it is shifted, differentiated, or combined with another signal. These rules are important in signal processing, radio broadcasting, and audio work.

The frequency shifting property shows that moving a signal in frequency causes a phase change in time. If x(t) has a Fourier Transform X(f), then multiplying x(t) by e^j2πf0t gives a transform of X(f−f0). This idea is used in radio broadcasting, where a carrier signal is modulated by an input signal so that different channels can share different frequency bands.

The time differentiation property connects a change in time to a change in frequency. The Fourier Transform of the derivative of x(t) is j2πfX(f), where X(f) is the transform of x(t). In other words, differentiating in time becomes multiplication by j2πf in frequency. This helps explain how time-based changes, such as broadcast delays tied to time zones, affect signals.

The frequency differentiation property is the matching rule on the frequency side. It shows that differentiating in the frequency domain corresponds to multiplying by −j2πt in the time domain. Together with time differentiation, it shows that the two domains are closely linked.

The duality property shows a mirror-like symmetry between time and frequency. If X(f) is the Fourier Transform of x(t), then x(f) is the Fourier Transform of X(−t). This symmetry also appears in the sign change in the exponential term of the Fourier integral.

The convolution property is especially useful for combining signals. If x(t) and h(t) are convolved to make y(t), then the Fourier Transform of y(t) is Y(f)=X(f)H(f). This makes it easier to work with filtering and system analysis, since convolution in time becomes multiplication in frequency.
