ハンマーは、プランジャーをハンマーに押し付けることにより、均一なコンクリート表面に対して垂直に保持され、スプリングが伸びて質量が引っ込められます。

離すと、質量はプランジャーから跳ね返ります。このリバウンドの程度は、ハンマーに固定されたスケールで測定され、リバウンド数と呼ばれます。

リバウンド数の値が高いほど、コンクリート表面は硬くなり、コンクリートの強度が高いことを示します。
