Brick cuts help fit bricks into small spaces in a wall. A mason uses a hammer with a chisel-pointed end for basic shaping. The mason strikes the brick with sharp, precise blows. For more exact cuts, a power saw with a water-cooled diamond blade is used.

Cut bricks are also named by size. A half-bat is a brick cut to half its original length. A three-fourth bat is cut to three-fourths of its length. These cut pieces help fill gaps and keep the wall pattern aligned.

Some cuts are made for specific bonding patterns. A queen closer has the same length and thickness as a standard brick, but half the width. It is commonly used in the English bond pattern. A king closer has one end cut to half the width, which creates a slanted corner from the midpoint of two adjacent edges. Other forms, such as the beveled closer, quarter bat, and mitered closer, are shaped for special construction needs. Each type supports the needed structure and appearance in masonry.
