Soil Microbial Ecology

土壌には、菌類、原生生物、細菌など多様な微生物群集が存在します。土壌微生物は主に土壌粒子や土壌の構造や質感によって形成される孔隙内に生息します。菌類と細菌が主な分解者です。細胞外酵素を分泌し、セルロースを吸収可能な糖に分解します。原生生物は細菌や菌類を食べて栄養分を再利用することで、間接的に植物の分解に寄与します。最終的に分解は二酸化炭素を放出し、土壌有機物の形成に寄与し、栄養分を蓄え土壌を安定させます。土壌微生物群集の組成に影響を与える要因はいくつかあります。降雨などの環境条件は孔隙を飽和させ、土壌環境を急速に酸化状態から無酸素状態へと変化させ、微生物の多様性、代謝、特に植物の根付近のガス濃度に影響を与えます。炭化水素で汚染された土壌には、アクチノミセトータ門の細菌が豊富に存在することが多いです。さらに、窒素やリンの汚染は微生物の多様性やバイオマスを減少させ、土壌の健康にも影響を及ぼします。

土壌微生物生態学

Soil microbes drive nutrient cycling, organic matter turnover, and ecosystem stability. A gram of soil can contain thousands of bacterial and archaeal taxa, but their shared job is what helps sustain land ecosystems. Their activity changes the way carbon, nitrogen, and other nutrients move through soil.

Soil is a patchwork of minerals, organic matter, water, and air. Microbes live in tiny microhabitats shaped by pore size, moisture, oxygen, and nutrients. Sandy soils drain fast and tend to favor aerobic metabolism, which uses oxygen. Clay-rich soils hold water and often support anaerobic processes such as fermentation and methanogenesis, where oxygen is limited. This small-scale mix of conditions lets many metabolic pathways exist just millimeters apart.

Soil organic matter, or SOM, comes mainly from plant material and feeds microbial growth. Labile compounds break down quickly, while cellulose and lignin need specialized decomposers such as cellulolytic bacteria, actinobacteria, and white-rot fungi. A small part of the carbon becomes stabilized SOM, which helps store carbon long term and retain nutrients in the soil.

Soil microbes respond quickly to environmental change. Wetting and drying cycles shift oxygen levels and can change both microbial metabolism and SOM stability. Farming practices such as tilling, heavy fertilization, and irrigation can speed up SOM breakdown and upset nutrient balance. Ammonium fertilizers are quickly nitrified to nitrate, which can leach into groundwater or escape as nitrous oxide, and extra phosphorus runoff can cause eutrophication in nearby waters.

Microbial life continues below topsoil, even in low-energy environments. Microbial abundance drops, but specialized taxa still survive in oligotrophic conditions with very little available energy. Many use chemolithoautotrophic metabolisms, such as hydrogen oxidation or sulfate reduction. Scientists have even detected microbial life kilometers below the surface, showing how well these organisms adapt to nutrient scarcity and limited energy.
