有機化学における重要な官能基の一つが、炭素原子が酸素に二重結合したカルボニル官能基です。
密接に関連する2つのカルボニルベースの有機化合物は、アルデヒドとケトンです。アルデヒドでは、カルボニル炭素はアルキル基と水素原子に結合しています。例外はホルムアルデヒドで、カルボニル炭素が2つの水素に結合しています。
一方、ケトンでは、カルボニル炭素原子は炭化水素骨格内の他の2つの炭素原子に結合しています。
カルボニル基は、カルボニル炭素に結合したヒドロキシル基からなるカルボン酸のカルボキシル基など、多くの大きな官能基の一部を形成します。
カルボン酸の官能誘導体には、カルボキシル基の水素がアルキル基に置換されたエステル、カルボキシル基のOHがアミンに置換されたアミド、OHが塩化物に置換された塩化アシルなどがあります。

These groups determine how organic molecules behave chemically and interact with other substances.

Both aldehydes and ketones contain a carbonyl group—a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen.
