The three primary categories of blood vessels are arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart, except pulmonary arteries which transport deoxygenated blood to the lungs. Veins return deoxygenated blood to the heart, except pulmonary veins which carry oxygenated blood from the lungs. Capillaries, the smallest vessels, facilitate nutrient and gas exchange between blood and tissues.

Artery walls are thick and composed of three layers: the tunica intima (endothelial cells), tunica media (smooth muscle and elastic fibers), and tunica externa (connective tissue). Vein walls are thinner with less smooth muscle and elastic tissue in the tunica media, and a thicker tunica externa for support. This structural difference allows arteries to withstand high pressure while veins function under low pressure with larger diameters.

Capillaries, comprising a single layer of endothelial cells, facilitate the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, waste products, and hormones between blood and surrounding tissues. Their thin structure enables efficient nutrient delivery to cells and removal of metabolic waste. This exchange process ensures cells receive essential substances while maintaining the body's internal balance.

Arterioles are smaller branches of arteries containing more smooth muscle and less elastic tissue than large arteries. These vessels are the primary sites of vascular resistance, allowing them to regulate blood pressure and direct blood flow to specific tissues. The smooth muscle in arteriole walls contracts or relaxes to control vessel diameter, significantly contributing to overall blood pressure regulation.

The muscle pump mechanism occurs when skeletal muscle contractions in the legs and arms compress veins, propelling blood toward the heart. This process is essential for maintaining blood flow in the low-pressure venous system, especially in the extremities where gravity opposes upward blood movement. Without this mechanism, blood would pool in the legs and return to the heart would be significantly impaired.

Large arteries possess thick walls composed primarily of elastic tissue to cushion the pressure from ventricular contractions and propel blood forward. This elasticity allows them to stretch during systole when the heart pumps blood, then recoil during diastole to maintain continuous blood pressure. The elastic fibers enable large arteries to handle blood surges with each heartbeat while maintaining stable circulation.

The superior vena cava delivers deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, and arms to the heart, while the inferior vena cava returns blood from the lower body. These are the largest veins in the body, operating under low pressure and accommodating high blood volume. Pressure in the right side of the heart affects these large vessels, facilitating the return of deoxygenated blood for reoxygenation in the lungs.
